Pálás cinema is set to close it’s door by February 28th but we won’t let that happen!
Next Wednesday 12th at 7pm at 126gallery.studios in Galway is an opportunity to come and have your say on the future of Pálás cinema, and to tell the councillors and TDs in attendance what Pálás means to you. Local Praxis members have called a public meeting alongside Catu Galway and Socialist Party Galway and will stand in solidarity with the rest of the arts community, as we discuss how we can mobilise resistance to save Pálás.
As a UNESCO City of Film, Galway needs an arthouse cinema dedicated to its vibrant film community—a space that serves local filmmakers, film festivals like the Galway Arts Festival, and the annual Film Fleadh. Running Pálás on a profit-driven model was always going to be challenging, highlighting why cultural institutions must be managed by the cultural community and supported by the state.We believe Pálás should remain open, publicly run, and operated on a not-for-profit basis—serving the public that originally funded it. More than just a cinema, Pálás is a vital hub for independent film and a key venue for local arts organisations. As one of the few purpose-built arts spaces in Galway, we cannot afford to lose it.
We urge all artists, cultural workers, and the wider public to join us in planning the next steps to keep Pálás open. Your voice matters – let’s stand together to protect Galway’s cultural future.
