Local Praxis members were out in force with the rest of the Galway arts community as over 200 people turned up on Saturday to protest the impending closure of the Pálás cinema.Pálás is due to close this weekend, a decision which would deal a blow to the city’s arts community.
As the only art house cinema in the west of Ireland, and one of the few purpose built art spaces in Co Galway, the space serves local filmmakers, film festivals like the Galway Arts Festival, and the annual Film Fleadh, amongst many others. The cinema is also a key component in Galway’s designation as a UNESCO City of Film.
Running Pálás on a profit-driven model has not proven successful, highlighting why cultural institutions must be managed by the cultural community and supported by the state. We believe Pálás should remain open, publicly run, and operated on a not-for-profit basis—serving the public that originally funded it.Whatever happens this weekend, Praxis members in Galway will continue to fight for Pálás!
